While I do agree the dunes protect us from storms, and that the dunes are a fantastic asset to the town, everyone needs to realize a fundamental difference between us an those towns that get sand on their boardwalk and Ocean Ave. In those towns, the sand goes right up and touches the boardwalk or the street. There is no border and nothing in between. In our town, there is a lot of real estate between the edge of the sand and Ocean Ave. Furthermore that sand is several feet below the level of the boardwalk and street. That is why we don't get as much sand on the boardwalk and Ocean Ave. We do get it in the south end of town where the sand does come up and almost touches the boardwalk.

Imagine if the westward toe of the dunes stopped at the parking meters. Don't you think we'd have sand on Ocean Ave? Of course we would. I'm glad we don't, but realize it is the smart placement of the dunes, not the dunes themselves.

Again, I am the biggest fan of the dunes. But those pictures don't exactly compare apples to apples.

Welcome back Madame Mayor!
I can't agree with Shirley more - the photos and written description of what our sand dunes are doing for our community are spot on. The next time I hear someone complain about their lack of ocean view I'll direct them to this post so they can see the positive effects.

Nice job, Julie, of describing in words and pictures what our dunes have done for our beaches, boardwalk and Ocean Avenue. It is unbelievable that your pictures were taken on the same day. To Richie and the boys at PW, great job, guys.
